Definition: A rubric is a type of a scoring guide used to assess specific components and expectations of an assignment or entire lesson.

Usefulness
  • They are a great tool to evaluate teamwork and individual contribution to group activities.
  • Students can use them easily for self-assessment to understand and improve their performance and learning.
  • Students can use them to provide peer-assessment on various drafts.

Educators

Save time in grading, both short-term and long-term.

Refine teaching methods.

Students

Build understanding and skills/competencies, while also enable them to accurately assess the quality of their own work.

Understand expectations and components of an assignment.

Improve their work through detailed feedback.

Types of Rubrics

1/Analytic Rubrics

An analytic rubric offers a grid with criteria for a learning product listed in the left column and with the levels of performance listed across the top row. The level of performance is provided using number and/or descriptive tags. The central cells could either be left blank or contain descriptions of the specific criteria.

Attention, each point for each criterion needs to be well-defined in order for raters to arrive at the same score.

Below you can check an example of an analytic rubric.

Analytic Rubric for Assessing Writing Literacy Skills
Skill 1-Beginning 2-Developing 3-Proficient 4-Accomplished 5-Exemplary
Content and Ideas Ideas are unclear or irrelevant; lacks a central theme. Some ideas are relevant; the main theme is present but not fully developed. Ideas are clear and relevant; the main theme is adequately developed. Ideas are insightful and well-developed; effectively engages the reader. Ideas are original and profound; offers unique perspectives and deep insights.
Organization Writing is disorganized; lacks clear structure or flow. Some organizational structure; transitions are weak or confusing. Clear organization with logical flow; transitions connect ideas effectively. Well-organized; clear structure enhances understanding and engagement. Exceptionally organized; sophisticated structure that enhances clarity and impact.
Language Conventions Frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling; difficult to understand. Several errors that distract from meaning but some parts are understandable. Minor errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling; overall clarity is maintained Few errors; demonstrates strong command of language conventions. Virtually no errors; shows exceptional command of language and style, enhancing the writing's effectiveness.

2/Checklists

Checklists have only two performance level possible, so every decision is binary (yes/no, pass/fail etc.). Thus, checklists tend to be longer than other types of rubrics since each aspect of performance that needs to be checked essentially becomes a distinctive criterion.

Checklists are generally a simpler and faster way to grade than using a more traditional rubric.

Most rubrics can be converted into a checklist.

Below you can check an example of a checklist.

Criterion Yes No
All paragraphs have clear explanations.
The paragraphs are thorough.
The reflections on each problem were thoughtful.
All suggestions are effective.

3/Developmental Rubrics

Developmental rubrics are a subcategory of analytic rubrics, with the purpose not to evaluate a specific end product or performance rather than answering to what extent students developing a specific skills/ability/value/competency etc..

Below you can check an example of a developmental rubric.

Developmental Rubric for Assessing Intercultural Intelligence
Scale 1 - Emerging 2 - Developing 3 - Proficient
Awareness Limited awareness of one's own culture and its influence on perspectives; lacks understanding of cultural differences. Some awareness of personal cultural biases; recognizes the existence of different cultures and perspectives. Strong awareness of personal cultural background; actively seeks to understand and appreciate cultural differences
Communication Struggles to communicate effectively across cultures; may rely on stereotypes or assumptions. Attempts to communicate with individuals from different cultures; shows some respect for cultural differences, but may still encounter misunderstandings. Effectively communicates across cultures; adapts language and style to fit different cultural contexts and fosters mutual understanding.
Adaptability Limited ability to adapt to new cultural situations; prefers familiar environments and routines. Some ability to adjust to new cultural settings; open to new experiences but may struggle with full integration. Highly adaptable in diverse cultural environments; embraces new experiences and demonstrates flexibility in interactions.

4/Holistic Rubrics

A holistic rubric consists of a single scale with all criteria to be included in the evaluation being considered together, assessing students' overall performance. With the holistic rubric the instructor assigns a single score (usually on a 1 to 4 or 1 to 6 point scale).

Below you can check an example of a holistic rubric.

Holistic Rubric for Assessing Technology Use

Demonstrates an emerging understanding of tools and their applications.

3 - Proficient

Competent in using technology.

Able to navigate various tools and applications effectively.

Shows ability to solve common problems and apply technology to enhance productivity and learning.

4 - Exemplary
