The role of assessment in Sustainability education
This chapter introduces the European GreenComp framework for assessing sustainability competencies and provide support of how to evaluate students' sustainability skills effectively.
1.Introduction to GreenComp Framework
The GreenComp Framework is a European initiative designed to assess and develop sustainability competencies in learners of all ages. The framework focuses on the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to address environmental, economic, and social sustainability challenges.
Here you can find the framework, by clicking on the link: The GreenComp Framework
GreenComp outlines 12 key competencies, divided into four broad categories:
- Embodying sustainability values (valuing sustainability, supporting fairness, promoting nature).
- Embracing complexity in sustainability (systems thinking, critical thinking, problem framing).
- Envisioning sustainable futures (futures literacy, adaptability, exploratory thinking).
- Acting for sustainability (political agency, collective action, individual initiative).
The competencies focus on fostering an integrated understanding of sustainability issues and the ability to act in responsible and proactive ways.
2.Educational assessment of sustainability competencies
Educational assessment of sustainability competencies helps to:
- track learners' understanding and ability to apply sustainability concepts.
- identify strength and areas for improvements in sustainability-related practices.
- guide future learning strategies and curriculum development.
3.Practical assessment strategies based on GreenComp
There are several activities that can be linked with sustainability competencies learning. Below there are a few activity examples that you can work with:
3.1.Case studies
Objective: To assess student's ability to analyze complex sustainability problems.
Instructions: Ask students to investigate local environmental challenges (ex. energy efficiency, water management etc). They must present their findings and propose sustainable solutions, considering economic, environmental, and social factors.
Competencies: valuing sustainability, supporting fairness, promoting nature, adaptability.
3.2.Role-play game activities
Objective: To test the application of knowledge in real-world scenarios, and boost the use of imagination.
Instructions: Present hypothetical scenarios of climate change topics (mitigation and adaptation in urban environments, coastal management etc). Divide students in groups and ask them to brainstorm about possible solutions. Ask students to decide and plan their action plans.
Competencies: systems thinking, futures literacy, collective action.
3.3.Group projects
Objective: To promote and evaluate teamwork and collaborative decision-making.
Instructions: Organize collaborative projects, like the design of a sustainable community initiative, the cleaning of the local park, a food waste management campaign for the school.
Competencies: critical thinking, problem framing, valuing sustainability, political agency, collective action.
4. Aligning assessment with GreenComp competencies
By explicitly linking your assessments with specific GreenComp competencies, you can help your students understand the relevance of their learning and how it contributes to the broader sustainability goals and efforts.
In your effort to create an assessment based on GreenComp, link the competencies with their descriptors. For example:
- Embodying sustainability values: Is the student able to reflect on personal values, and identify and explain how those values vary among people and over time?
- Embracing complexity in sustainability: Can the student formulate current or potential challenges as a sustainability problem in order to identify suitable approaches to anticipating and preventing problems?
- Envisioning sustainable futures: Can the student manage transitions and challenges in complex sustainable situations and make relevant decisions?
- Acting for sustainability: Can the student identify own potential for sustainability and act for change in collaboration with others?
